Problem

We are experiencing a socio-economic revolution, with “data & the human brain” at its center. New technology gives access to an unparalleled amount and new types of data (e.g. bio-metric). This revolution creates a vast amount of opportunities, yet also causes increased uncertainty, a continuous need to adapt, and it puts pressure on both people and organizations. Externally, organizations are under pressure to compete based on the capability to be smarter and more agile in creating and capturing value in markets through research and development, knowledge management, and continued innovation. Internally, brainpower gradually replaces muscle power as the basic factor of productivity.

The adagio “mens sana en corpore sano” is taking the center stage in organizations as physical health is essential for mental health, flexibility and resilience, which in turn is key for knowledge creation and service quality. On top of all this, well-being is under siege by new stressors like continuous connectivity, information overload, digital illiteracy, cybertheft and cyberbullying. Leaders are caught in this perfect storm. They are responsible for transformation, results and well-being while also personally undergoing the uncertain consequences of the data-revolution.

Solution

Antwerp Management School wants to explore this leadership challenge in-depth by organizing a chair on neurosciences and technology-enabled high performance organizations. The chair aims to develop strategies for leaders and organizations to collect, use and study biometrical data for the benefit of leader development and sustainable, organizational performance, including well-being.

The chair brings all relevant stakeholders to the table: organizations dedicated to collection, generation, analysis, transmission and use of biometric data, as well as organizations pioneering neuroscience and technology enabled productivity and well-being strategies, and regulating bodies. Its proposition is unique as it combines neuroscience, organizational behavior research, leadership development practice, (wearable) technology and cross-cultural contexts.

Progress

The core research activities center around the NeurotraininglabTM and Entrepreneurial Team Challenge. The research focuses on the cross-section of neuroscience, organizational behavior, leadership, performance and well-being in organizations. Specific areas for ongoing enquiry, i.e. areas in which the Chair intends to advance research projects, include:

  • neuroscience-based theory: science-based processes of cognitive and emotional regulation for optimizing the resources and performance of the brain.
  • (wearable) “trans” technology: collecting biometric data (heart rate, respiration, temperature, eye tracking, bio-feedback), neurophysiologic data (EEG, neuro-feedback), neuro-imaging (PET, MRI, fMRI) or neuro-biological data (analysis of saliva, blood and urine samples) for health monitoring and improvement.
  • data-driven and customized solutions: big data and AI informed rule-based algorithms for personalized development paths and strategies.
  • dynamic leadership at the top: examine the link between leadership behavior at the top and organizational outcomes.
  • holistic solutions: physical, neurophysiological, psychological, social, cultural and virtual solutions to create high performance organizations.

We do not only aim to study how insights generated in neuroscience challenge the paradigms, theories, and methods used to study organizational behavior and well-being in organizations up until today. The ultimate goal is to instruct both researchers and practitioners on how neuroscience principles and insights can inform science and practice of self-leadership and management of people in organizations.

In sum, the Chair aims to demonstrate thought leadership on the path towards sustainable high-performance organizations and well-being. Our mission is to prepare, develop and enable well-equilibrated professionals, high performance teams and organizations, and contribute to a sustainable society – profitable, healthy, innovative, and responsible.
