Prof. dr. Tom Van Caneghem started his career as an auditor at PwC. After obtaining his PhD at the University of Antwerp (2005), he started working as a full-time professor (KU Leuven amongst other). From 2022 onwards, he is fulltime associate professor in the field of financial accounting at the University of Antwerp and Antwerp Management School. He teaches various courses in the financial reporting domain (e.g., financial accounting, financial statements analysis)
Currently his research mainly focuses on non-profit organizations (NPOs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). His research interests/topics include (but are not restricted to): financial reporting (e.g., earnings management, financial statements quality); external auditing (e.g., audit quality; audit pricing); and external certification (e.g., financial transparency labels in the nonprofit sector).
His articles have been published in several leading academic journals, including British Accounting Review, European Accounting Review, Small Business Economics and Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly.
