Prof. dr. Christa Sys is Professor at the Department of Transport and Regional Economics, Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Antwerp. She holds the BNP Paribas Fortis Chair on Transport, Logistics and Ports and is Academic Promoter of the Dennie Lockefeer Chair on intermodality. From 2010 to 2013, she served as Scientific Director of the Research Centre on Freight and Passenger Flows.

At the Centre for Maritime and Air Transport (C-MAT), hosted at Antwerp Management School, she co-coordinates Fundamentals of Maritime Shipping and coordinates Maritime Economics and Businesses and Maritime Supply Chain & Hinterland. She also teaches within Dutch-language programmes at the Faculty of Business and Economics, with a focus on operational aspects of maritime transport, maritime economics, logistics and transport.

Her research covers maritime economics, with particular emphasis on cooperation and competition in shipping. She obtained her PhD in Applied Economics jointly from Ghent University and the University of Antwerp in 2010. Her dissertation on competitive conditions, concentration and market structure in container liner shipping received the General Manager Fernand Suykens Prize for Port Studies from the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences. In 2024, she was awarded the honorary degree of Commander in the Order of the Crown.
