PIONEERS: A green revolution for ports

Creating smart ecosystems

PIONEERS: A green revolution for ports

The PIONEERS project represents an ambitious European initiative, bringing together a consortium of over 45 partners—spanning ports, academic institutions, and industry leaders—to redefine ports as sustainable, resilient, and intelligent hubs. At its core, the project is anchored by the Lighthouse Port of Antwerp, supported by the follower ports of Barcelona, Constanta, and Venlo. These ports function as living laboratories for innovations in clean energy, digitalization, sustainable infrastructure, and multimodal logistics. Through collaborative innovation and the expertise of its diverse partners, PIONEERS is establishing new standards for sustainability and delivering practical, scalable solutions to achieve climate-neutral port operations on a global scale.

Driving sustainability and efficiency

The PIONEERS project is driving transformative change by integrating sustainability with operational efficiency. It introduces cutting-edge solutions for green energy integration and optimizes modal transport systems, reducing environmental impact while enabling cleaner and smarter logistics systems. Key initiatives include improving traffic flow in and around port-city peripheries to alleviate congestion and emissions, thereby enhancing mobility for goods and people. Moreover, the project fosters collaboration and alignment among stakeholders to ensure innovations address both institutional and market needs. These comprehensive efforts contribute directly to achieving the climate-neutrality objectives outlined in the European Green Deal.

AMS's role: enabling digital and collaborative solutions

Antwerp Management School (AMS) plays a vital role in PIONEERS, leading the development of the Gateway Access Point Network (GAP-N). This includes identifying requirements and designing a digital gateway platform that optimizes traffic management and improves the modal mix in port-city peripheries. Special emphasis is placed on integrating green transport solutions and autonomous ship-to-shore interfaces to advance sustainability objectives.

In addition, AMS supports the creation of multi-stakeholder servitization models, addressing interdependencies and incentivizing innovation within the ecosystem. AMS also contributes to developing governance frameworks for smart corridors, ensuring long-term collaboration and investments in green technologies and infrastructure.
