Neurosciences applied to leadership and coaching (NELA)

Understanding how the mind and the brain work is fundamental for any professional focused on improving organizational performance and health. It is in this context that the NeuroScience of Leadership (NELA) program can be set. It consists of two courses: NELA and NELA-PRO.

NELA is developed for an audience of business managers, consultants and coaches who want to inspire an enrich their practice of leadership, change management and coaching. It aims to provide thenecessary knowledge, resources and network to help leaders develop the appropriate mindset and skills to deal with one of the greatest challenges in organizations: manage and motivate people to seek self leadership, team cohesion and organizational efficiency. This experience includes training sessions in the NeuroTrainingLab, especially designed to assess and develop leadership competencies and associated neuro-physiologic activity.

Our mission is to develop assertive, empathetic and inspirational leadership in organizations, in order to build profitable and socially responsible and sustainable organizations We hope to achieve this mission by spreading our knowledge and enthusiasm to those interested to join. Our team consists of experts in leadership, organizational development, pedagogy and neuroscience, in order to give the participants a learning experience with direct implications for the practice as a leader or developer.

Course content

Day 1: Introduction to neuro anatomy and the neuroscience of leadership

The first module is intended to orient the participant, provide the basic insights in neuro anatomy, neurophysiology, the functioning of neurotransmitters, and the basic functions of different regions in the brain in order to derive basic leadership principles that underlie the whole course Participants are introduced to the Healthy Mind Platter, a holistic model for optimizing brain performance.

Day 2: The conscious brain (teleological neuroscience, motivation)

This module focuses on motivation, providing a neuroscience based approach to motivated behavior We discuss the reward circuitry of the brain, the role of dopaminergic pathways, approach and avoidance orientation The capacity of the brain to create reality through visualization, and its implications for formulating the vision, strategy and mission of the organization and motivating staff.

Day 3: The unique brain (dispositional neuroscience)

We look at neuroscience based trait and state like inter individual differences or the neural substrates of personality and cognitive styles, or brain dominance We discuss the reinforcement sensitivity theory, left right brain functional specialization, and the neural correlates of the MBTI and BIG 5 dimensions Understanding how people fundamentally differ in the way they prefer to select and process information helps to adopt a situational leadership style that allows a leader to adapt to different social demands and leverage the complementary talents in a team.

NELA-PRO Day 1: general overview of the NeuroTrainingLab

Participants receive a general briefing on how the prepare a NeuroTrainingLab exercise First, they get a full panorama of a developmental process, starting with the identification of the scope, target, and methods in a management development program Against this background we can set the use of the NTL as one possible tool for developing leadership competencies in managers Next we focus on the developmental process of the NTL exercise Formulating a research question, conducting a literature review, writing a case, selecting, briefing and training actors, developing and using competency observation sheets, delivering feedback, conducting coaching sessions, writing reports, and commercializing the NeuroTrainingLab.

NELA-PRO Day 2: conducting research

In this workshop participants start developing NeuroTrainingLab exercise by choosing a research question and a specific set of leadership competencies They get a full review of how to set up an experimental study, how to formulate research questions, conducting a literature review, develop hypotheses, fine tune data collection methods, collect data, process and interpret data, and write up and discuss the results of the study.

NELA-PRO Day 3: ethics & briefing clients

In this workshop we explain the neuro physiologic indicators and develop different ways of providing participants with neuro feedback in a relevant and integrated way. Last but not least participants are briefed on the expectations regarding reporting based on NTL exercises, and how to triangulate and integrate multiple source data into one, coherent and concise report.

The NeuroTrainingLabâ„¢ is a methodology for the development of leadership competencies, that allows observing leadership behaviors and measuring associated neuro-cognitive activity. Its purpose is to increase EQ, performance and health in professionals by giving contingent, task-based neurofeedback. Participants confront emotionally challenging business situations, interacting with one another and a specially trained actor.

Our feedback allows them to test, observe, and improve their responses, arguments, behaviors, and their biometric / EEG activity with underlying leadership competencies.

In this video, Prof. Dr. Steven Poelmans explains the neuro, training and lab separately.
