Prof. dr. David Martens holds a PhD in Applied Economic Sciences from KU Leuven (2008). He is Professor of Data Science at the University of Antwerp, where he directs the Applied Data Mining Research Group within the Faculty of Business and Economics. In addition, he serves as Chair of the Department of Engineering Management and is Director of the Antwerp Center on Responsible AI.
David teaches courses in machine learning, data science, and data ethics to postgraduate students in business economics and business engineering at the University of Antwerp. His research, which focuses on data mining, interpretable machine learning, and the societal impact of AI, has been published in leading scientific journals and has received multiple awards.
Alongside his academic activities, David has extensive experience as a data science consultant for banks, insurance companies, telecommunications firms, and tax administrations, particularly in the area of fraud detection. He has been involved in several data science startups and founded a company in digital advertising. He is the author of the book Data Science Ethics: Concepts, Techniques and Cautionary Tales, published by Oxford University Press.
