After burnout: what makes a return to work sustainable?

'Welzijn dat Werkt' is a podcast for leaders, HR professionals, and organizations that don’t see wellbeing as a separate project, but as an integral part of everyday operations. Sofie Meyer, founder of Liedr, explores what really makes wellbeing work within organizations, not in theory, but through everyday collaboration, conversations, culture, and leadership. Through insights, real-life examples, reflections, and honest stories from her work with leaders, teams, and organizations, Sofie offers a practical and grounded perspective on creating workplaces where wellbeing truly works.

Wat maakt dat iemand na een burn-out niet alleen opnieuw aan het werk gaat, maar ook duurzaam aan het werk blijft?

In this episode, I speak with Eva Geluk, Professor of Mental Health at Work at Antwerp Management School. Her research shows why reintegration is about more than an individual recovery process. The work environment, the manager, colleagues, and the quality of dialogue also play an important role.

We talk about co-crafting, psychological safety, shared responsibility, and the value of a neutral facilitator when a reintegration process risks getting stuck. We also discuss an often-overlooked point: returning to work starts before the first day back and requires continued follow-up afterwards.

A thoughtful and practical conversation about what sustainable reintegration really requires.
