Frequently Asked Questions

Which are the most common leadership styles?

There are many different leadership styles, from a completely top-down directive leadership to shared leadership.

In recent years, the focus was often on transactional leadership and situational leadership, where the team leader is a ͚people manager͛. More and more however leadership styles are evolving towards transformational leadership and empowering leadership, where team members are inspired to achieve great results.

And last but not least there is personal leadership, the ability to analyze your thinking and to establish a specific direction for your own life. Building personal leadership is important to improve your own leadership style.

Can you learn leadership?

Through personal development and personal leadership you will discover different leadership styles. A leadership development program, such as the one at AMS by Jesse Segers, coaches you towards developing the leadership style that best suits your personality, while at the same time opening your eyes to other leadership styles and the situations in which they may be more adequate or effective. As a result, you will improve your leadership skills and know when and how to apply them, thus being a better leader for your team.

What is leadership?

Leadership is the ability to lead a group of people towards a specific goal. As a team leader in a business environment, you need a particular skillset in order to ensure that not only the goal is reached, but people work together smoothly as a team and individuals are motivated. At the same time, a business leader acts as a role model, inspiring people to work together and achieve great results. Leadership can be a natural talent, but through personal development programs, leadership can be improved and developed.

What is the difference between leadership and management?

A manager focuses on goals and tasks, while a leader also focuses on the people needed to accomplish those goals; they work on keeping the team motivated.

For a manager to become a leader, they need to understand how to make team members enthusiastic and how a team performs best. A manager who merely sticks to goals, objectives, targets and numbers does not lead a team; leadership starts when you succeed in transferring your drive to the members of your team. Insight in your own leadership style and being able to adapt it to the situation and the people in the team is what characterizes a modern business leader.

Which qualities should a good leader possess?

A good leader may be born with leadership talent, but many leadership qualities can be acquired through development programs. Effective leadership starts with self-knowledge and a genuine interest in the people who are part of your team. EQ is as important as IQ; you need to know what drives people and how they will thrive in the team.

Leading others requires proactivity, vision, empathy but also an ability to prioritize and good management skills. Taking the leadership development program that complements your natural assets will provide you with a complete skillset to become a good leader.

How can I become a leader?

Becoming a leader means you invest time and energy in the development of your leadership qualities. A leadership development program will give you a better perspective on personal leadership. You will find out what your natural leadership style is, how and when it works best and how you can improve or adjust it. Adequate communication training will help you communicate as a leader, while acquiring new leadership qualities will broaden your skillset to be able to lead, motivate and empower a team.

What is thought leadership?

Thought leaders are experts with a proven track record in their specific field or domain. At AMS, Koen Marichal and Jesse Segers are thought leaders in leadership, but the school has several expertise centers where thought leaders work around other business domains. Not only do thought leaders offer new ideas, but they provide meaningful insights and have the expertise and experience to back up their ideas with practical suggestions for implementation. New concepts are discussed and topics such a female leadership in business are highlighted in view of future entrepreneurship.

Which leadership programs are available?

There are many leadership programs, so it is important to choose the one that suits your needs. Maybe it would be beneficial for you to take a course in self-leadership. Or you are a young professional looking to climb the corporate ladder, or a middle manager wishing to develop your leadership. AMS offers several programs, tailor-made to the specific development needs of each individual. Every leadership development program helps you to improve your interpersonal skills, a necessary tool to becoming a better leader.

What is the role of a leader in an organization?

A leader is more than a boss and more than a manager. A good leader not only understands the goals of the organization and tells people when they are right or wrong; they also know how to build employee engagement and motivate team members through emotional intelligence and coaching leadership. Being able to adapt your leadership style to the situation is important to give team members the confidence to grow and thrive in their position as well as work efficiently towards the company goals.
